The worlds floated in just after bath time, the way they always did: a castle under the sea, a rocket, a dragon on a hill. But tonight, in the forest world, a small fox looked straight at her and waved. So she waved back.

Later, when the lamp was low, something tapped on the window. A paper bird, carrying a letter that smelled of pine needles. “Dear Girl With The Big Glasses,” it began. “Please come and visit. Map enclosed. It is quite small.”

Mum held up the glowing map. One path led to the fox’s garden gate. The other led to a lantern boat, bobbing on a silver lake. “That one,” she whispered, pointing at the gate. “Tomorrow.”
